Our first activity would involve talking to the children about their holidays. Many of them will choose to visit the beach as their favourite place, but they will all have different memories and experiences. Shirley Hughes has won the Other Award, the Eleanor Farjeon Award, and the Kate Greenaway Medal for Illustration twice, for Dogger in 1977 and for Ella's Big Chance in 2003. In 2007 Dogger was voted the public's favourite Greenaway winner of all time. She was Highly Commended for the Greenaway Medal for The Lion and the Unicorn in 1998. Shirley received an OBE in 1999 for services to Children's Literature, and a CBE in 2017. She was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and was the first recipient of BookTrust's Lifetime Achievement Award. Want some fun, free early years learning activities to do with your children that are linked to the EYFS areas of learning? Look no further! These Kinderly activities are intended to inspire early years practitioners with ideas based on children’s existing interests and fascinations or to ignite the spark of new ones. Sharing a Shell– Follow the story of a hermit crab as he learns about friendship in this Julia Donaldson-Lydia Monks classic. Cat invites the listeners to identify where they can hear the sounds? Cat then encourages the children to imagine that it is a beautiful day at the seaside and that they are applying suncream, digging in the sand, making sandcastles and eating ice-cream.

Younger (and older) children can enjoy making sandhills to jump off or digging holes in the sand – who can dig the deepest? Fill shallow holes with water to create paddling pools. Make sure any deep holes are filled in before you leave so no one falls in! Missing number worksheets to fill in the numbers on the sandcastles plus blank versions for you to add your own numbers Can you make your own junk model boat? Does it float? Can you add a sail and blow it to make it go?

This story is one of my 3-year-old's favourite in a treasury book of baby and toddler stories and rhymes we have. I like it too because it's easy to read and straightforward - not too descriptive but full of interesting things they get up to on a day trip to the beach. Shirley Hughes illustrated more than 200 children's books and is one of the best-loved writers for children, known for her beloved classics including the Alfie and Annie Rose stories, and Dogger. Wow Beeches! It looks like you had a super time with your learning at School and home. Well done and enjoy celebrating your fantastic efforts. For an extra special treat, take a look at Daisy's video (web link below) where she managed to teleport herself to the beach! Well done Daisy. It is fab! She also collaborated with her daughter, Clara Vulliamy, on the Dixie O'Day series; which saw Shirley with an illustrator for the first time with Shirley writing the text and Clara creating the illustrations. Have you ever written our recieved a postcard? Can you write a postcard imagining that you are on a seaside holiday. Who will you send it to? What activities might you do at the seaside that you could write about?

Beeches Home Learning Plan and Resources (Resources are optional and can be adapted)

Can you learn about sinking and floating? You could test different objects while in the bath to test if they sink or float. Wibbly Pig Likes to Have Fun– Wibbly Pig visits the beach and learns that surprises can be scary but also fun and that dropping ice cream can be sad. Help the children to clap with a steady beat. Once they are familiar with the song they could try the traditional game (it works best if adults are Arch and Leader). With gentle illustrations and easy-to-read text, Lucy and Tom at the Seaside is perfect for summer celebrations. Delighting children for generations, discover this soothing bedtime story. This week at school we are revising writing numbers. Can you have a go at writing some numbers. You could write them on a tray of sand or salt, with chalks or on paper. You could try some of the activities in this seaside maths activity book.

Children will relish this warm tale of everyday life with illustrations overflowing with colour and vitality.Alfie's painting at the Big School's Harvest Fair is judged worthy of one of the main prizes. But Alfie is more taken with the consolation prize... This is a wonderful story about Lucy and Tom's trip to the seaside. Now that it can be considered somewhat 'old fashioned', its charm is enhanced even greater.
